The Example They Follow: Kelver Choo on Fatherhood, Discipline and the Power of Showing Up
For Kelver Choo, running isn’t just about crossing finish lines or collecting race medals. It’s about setting an example for the three people watching him most closely – his children.
A dedicated father, frequent business traveller, and accomplished endurance athlete, Kelver has built a lifestyle around consistency, discipline, and showing up every day. Whether he’s training for a marathon, tackling an ultra trail, or supporting his family, the same principles guide him: commitment, resilience, and leading by example.
“I’m blessed with a wonderful family and fortunate enough to have an athlete spouse who inspires me every day,” says Kelver. “We’ve always been known as the sporty couple in our community, and even our children’s classmates and parents know us for staying active.”
While balancing family life, work commitments, and training can be challenging, Kelver sees it as an opportunity to demonstrate the values he hopes to pass on to his children.
A Journey That Started With One Step
Despite the impressive list of races to his name today, Kelver’s fitness journey began relatively recently.
In 2019, he was first introduced to community HIIT workouts by his wife. What started as a way to stay active soon evolved into a passion for endurance sports.
By 2024, he had joined local running clubs and immersed himself in Singapore’s running community. Just a year later, he achieved a milestone many runners aspire to: qualifying for the World Marathon Majors.
Since then, Kelver has embraced a wide range of endurance challenges. His training now spans marathons, ultra trails, obstacle course racing, and HYROX competitions.
In just a few short years, he has completed 23 overseas marathons, 6 ultra trail races, and 3 HYROX events.
Yet when asked about his proudest achievements, the conversation quickly shifts away from race statistics and towards family.
Making Time for What Matters
With frequent work travel and a busy family schedule, staying consistent requires careful planning.
Kelver runs at least four times a week, complements his training with two HIIT sessions, and allows himself no more than two rest days.
But beyond the training itself, he believes in listening to his body.
“If you’re in pain, stop. Recover properly and come back stronger.”
That same mindset applies to balancing the many roles he plays.
“The busy routine has become part of my life,” he says. “Whether it’s work travel, family commitments, or running, I always plan ahead so I can manage my time and navigate the challenges.”
Consistency, rather than perfection, has become the foundation of his success.
Lessons Beyond the Finish Line
Running has taught Kelver far more than how to race.
Through years of training and competition, he has developed a deeper understanding of self-motivation, discipline, awareness, and perseverance. These are the same qualities he hopes to instill in his children.
His message to them is simple:
“Continue to stay focused and deliver outcomes.”
As a father, Kelver believes running has also helped him become more empathetic and understanding.
The patience required to train for long-term goals mirrors the patience needed to support children through school, challenges, and personal growth.
“Being a father has made me more aware of the pressures my children face. I hope the values I’ve learned through running can help them become better individuals.”
The Moments That Matter Most
Some of Kelver’s most memorable races haven’t been overseas marathons or major endurance events.
Instead, they’ve been the moments shared alongside his children.
Over the years, he has participated with each of them in running events, duathlons, school fitness activities, and HYROX-style competitions. Together, they’ve celebrated achievements, stood on podiums, and created memories that extend far beyond sport.
“It has been a great father-child bonding experience,” he says. “We’ve learnt more about each other and grown even closer.”
One memory stands above the rest.
During a run-and-HYROX event organised by SAFRA, Kelver partnered with his youngest son. Despite competing against older participants, the duo finished second overall.
Watching his son step onto the podium and receive applause from the crowd became a moment he will never forget.
“I could see his excitement when he held the trophy and received a standing ovation from the spectators.”
For Kelver, that feeling was worth more than any personal achievement.
A Healthier Future Together
When asked what advice he would give to other fathers trying to balance family, work, and fitness, his answer is both practical and heartfelt.
“Be a responsible dad. Exercise to stay healthy, not become a burden to your children.”
For Kelver, fitness isn’t solely about performance. It’s about creating a healthier future—one where he can continue supporting his family, celebrating milestones, and eventually witnessing the next chapter of life as a grandparent.
It’s a reminder that every run serves a purpose beyond ourselves.
Sometimes, the most important finish lines aren’t marked by timing mats or medals. They’re the moments shared with the people we love most.
